Take me down to Chinatown | Singapore

November 23rd, 2009 by Kylene. Filed in Personal

It’s Monday evening here in Singapore and we’re getting ready to head to dinner. But I wanted to share a few pictures of our last couple of days! I also wanted to share some interesting things I’ve discovered while we’ve been here:

~It’s a very energy efficient country (energy is expensive because it comes from nearby Malaysia), so there’s lots of neat ways that they conserve:
~All the outlets have a switch you have to turn on for the outlet to work.
~All the appliances have a switch on the wall you have to turn on to use it (microwave, oven, etc.) so it’s not drawing energy constantly.
~Each room has it’s own air conditioning unit so you only cool the room that you’re sitting in. (they’re installed really nicely, up high on the walls and cool the room super fast!)
~Each bathroom has it’s own water heater with a switch. So you just switch it on 15 minutes before you’re ready to shower and turn it off the rest of the day.
~Taking a taxi around town is a super safe and clean way to travel.
~The funniest thing is taking a taxi back to where we’re staying – the driver doesn’t usually know the road, but if you tell them about the restaurant on the corner they know exactly where to go! (Boon Tong Kee, famous for their chicken and rice, we’re going there tonight!)

Here’s a few pictures from our adventure in Chinatown! We found a lot of neat things, most of which will be in Rylie’s stocking this year.   :)

Who doesn’t love Pork Floss?

There’s lots of cool architecture, the country is super modern!  I loved this funky bridge, it looks like a blowup toy!

Today we went to the famous Raffles Hotel and had their legendary “Singapore Sling”!

We had our drinks at the Long Bar.  It reminded me of something from an African safari…

Forest Adventure | Zip-Lining in Singapore

November 21st, 2009 by Kylene. Filed in Personal

I can’t explain to you how sore my body is this morning!!  We went zip-lining at this cool park here in Singapore.   We did this on our honeymoon so I thought I was prepared, but I was definitely wrong!  This was more of an obstacle course with a few zip-lines in the mix.  We climbed rope ladders and jumped into rope “cobwebs” that we had to climb back up to the platforms.  All was going well until we could choose a more difficult route, and Ryan and I thought we were doing ok, so we went the harder way.  This will now be described at my “Near Death  Experience”.  Thank goodness there’s no video of me trying to do this, but I did take a picture of it after we had gotten back down.  It didn’t look that hard, but I’m sure it was something that should have been a challenge on Survivor or Amazing Race.

Does this look hard to you?  We’re attached to a line that runs through the middle but we had to “jump” from bar to bar – but the bars were tilted…it was just ridiculous:

I have no shame in posting these videos.  The first one is of Ryan as he does the last zip-line and I’m on the platform behind him waving.  The really hard part was that you couldn’t control if you came into the landing straight!  If you didn’t, you just came in backwards and crashed into the sand.  We weren’t very good at coming in straight…

Now, here’s the really tough one to watch. But it also explains why my whole body hurts this morning! There wasn’t much sandpit to land in, and I was going so fast that it yanks me in the other direction when I got to the end. Not pleasant! :(

We ended our day at Little India with some awesome Indian food (my first) and then walked around the shops. There were literally thousands of Indian people, it was packed on a Saturday night! I didn’t take too many pictures, if I had stopped for a second I would have been swept away!

Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday night! Can’t wait to get home and see New Moon, it doesn’t come out here until December 3! :)

Ouch, it’s a good thing you had a helmet on Kylene. The pictures from Singapore are beautiful!
